Permits and inspections in Howard County

Howard County permits go through the Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits. Any new deck, porch, or pergola attached to the home requires a building permit. Howard County publishes a Typical Deck Details guide, and attached decks need frost protection 30 inches deep. Detached structures are reviewed as accessory structures and need a site plan showing location and property lines, with county zoning setbacks applying. In Columbia we also file for Columbia Association architectural review, which runs alongside the county permit. Howard County is landlocked, so there is no Chesapeake Critical Area review here, unlike Anne Arundel and Cecil.
